You will count on your sprinkler system to help you keep your yard looking the way that you want it to look. Since your sprinkler system does so much for you, you don't want to overlook those maintenance tasks you should be tending to that will keep the system running smoothly for as long as possible. Here is some information you should know about your sprinkler system:

Things to look for

You want to make sure you know what signs to look for that will tell you that there is an issue with your sprinkler system. If you see a problem that you aren't able to fix yourself, don't put off having it repaired or you run the risk of causing issues with your yard  -- this can lead to even more issues down the sprinkler line, depending on what the problem is. The next three points include information on tending to your sprinklers.

Check for leaks

Walk around your yard and look at the area around each one of your sprinkler heads. Make sure you don't see water pooled around it, or it may mean you have a leak in that sprinkler. You should also look for pools of water along the sprinkler system lines. It is possible that you could have a leak somewhere in the system; if you have a leak, then the water will cause the mud or pooling that you will see.

Check the sprinklers

Make sure all of your sprinkler heads are down when the sprinklers are off. You should also want to see that all of the sprinkler heads rise when the system is on. Make sure each sprinkler is spraying in the proper direction. It is possible for a sprinkler head to get dirty or be partially broken in a way that can lead to the water coming out in a direction you don't want it to. If the problem is minor, such as a clump of grass stuck to the head for some reason, then you can take care of it yourself. Otherwise, you want to get someone out to fix the sprinkler head.

Check the controller

Take a look at the controller. Make sure it is still mounted as it should be. Verify that the controller is clean and that you don't see any signs of damage. You also want to make sure you stay on top of changing the battery when it is bad or when it is getting old.
